Ozone is a potent oxidizing agent used for disinfection of drinking water. Ozone is the safest among all chemical disinfectants when used for bottled water disinfection. A commonly used water disinfectant is Chlorine. But due to its hazardous nature, residual properties due to long half-life and dangerous disinfectant-by-product (DBPs), it cannot be used to disinfect the package drinking water. Till the year 1070, it was highly challenging for the bottled water industries to protect the bottled water from bacterial contamination. Post-1970, when Ozone was used in the USA for bottled water, the industry had the much-awaited breakthrough. With a low dose of Ozone, RO-treated water in a storage tank can now be disinfected.

In 1982, Ozone was approved in the United States of America as "Generally Recognized As Safe (GRAS)". In 2001, under the FDA's final rule, 21 CFR Part 173.336, Ozone got approval from the USFDA for direct contact with food and beverage. Soon, Ozone was listed in the National Organic Program, allowing packaged products to be labelled "Organic".

Ozone treatment has multiple unmatched advantages compared to any other disinfectant technique. Due to this, Ozone was made mandatory by the "International Bottled Water Association" to use Ozone in the final stage of bottling. IBWA recommends that the RO permit water tank be dosed with 1.0 to 2.0 ppm of Ozone. The residual Ozone in the water going for bottling should be 0.2 to 0.4 ppm, so the ozonated water can disinfect the PET bottle and the cap from inside.
